13 Mile Road Sanitary Pump Station Rehabilitation and Force Main

The City of Roseville is undertaking a major infrastructure rehabilitation effort to replace its aging 13 Mile Road sanitary pump station and more than 4,000 feet of deteriorating force main. The project includes constructing a new submersible pump station with modern at‑grade controls, an on‑site natural gas backup generator, and the abandonment of the existing wet well/dry well system. Work is occurring in a highly constrained corridor near Groesbeck Highway, Utica Road, and the CN Railroad, where maintaining traffic flow and securing railroad permits present significant challenges. Construction is further complicated by tight spacing, numerous utilities, and long directional drilling pulls—some averaging 600 feet—which are uncommon for similar municipal projects. To address these obstacles, the team is using trenchless technologies such as horizontal directional drilling and bore‑and‑jack installation to minimize excavation, reduce disruption, and allow the force main to be installed within the center turn lane and beneath the railroad tracks. The new pump station design eliminates confined‑space entry and relocates electrical components to a climate‑controlled building, improving safety and long‑term serviceability. When completed, the project will provide reliable operation for decades, with an expected 30‑year pump station life and 50‑year force main lifespan.
