Father Cairns Park
The 4.47-acre Father Cairns Park in Monroe underwent a comprehensive renovation between Roessler and Union streets. The project encompassed demolition, soil erosion control, tree protection, earthwork, storm sewer work, water service installation, new electrical service, restroom and maintenance building construction, pickleball and tennis court lighting, curb and gutter installation, asphalt paving and marking, concrete paving, pickleball and tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, site furniture, landscaping, and irrigation.
Anderson, Eckstein & Westrick, Inc. (AEW) served as a subconsultant, providing civil engineering, supplemental construction observation, boundary surveying, topographic surveying, and construction staking services. Challenges included a shallow storm sewer outlet, addressed by AEW’s innovative design using open swales and Nyloplast drainage structures. Additionally, coordination with DTE Energy was essential due to underground electric lines near a Detroit Edison substation. The collaborative efforts of the City of Monroe, consultants, contractors, and utility companies ensured timely conflict resolution, resulting in an enhanced park for community sporting events, family picnics, and playground activities.
