Southeast Macomb Sanitary District (SEMSD) Operations Facility

To better serve communities in southeast Macomb and northeast Wayne Counties, SEMSD replaced its outdated, nearly century-old pump station with a new operations facility. The building was designed to house office space, a SCADA control room, conference room, and a garage with mezzanine storage for vehicles and equipment. Emphasizing natural light and staff well-being, the design includes abundant windows—even in the garage—and honors the original station through the use of reclaimed brick and historic fixtures. AEW provided architectural, civil, and structural engineering, surveying, design, and construction services. A key challenge was keeping the old station operational during construction and working around century-old utility systems. The result is a modern, efficient facility that strengthens the region’s sanitary infrastructure.
