Stage Nature Center Sugar Shed

The City of Troy is replacing the aging maple syrup evaporator shed at the Stage Nature Center with a slightly larger, more durable wood‑framed structure built on a concrete slab while reusing existing utilities. AEW is providing architectural, civil, and structural design services, including conceptual design, design development, and full construction documents tailored to the environmentally sensitive and actively used site. The project presents unique challenges, including the need to preserve existing utility leads, maintain accessibility for program use, and work within tight construction access constraints that require a temporary driveway. To address these conditions, AEW developed cost‑efficient design concepts that enhance durability and functionality without expanding the shed’s footprint or disturbing natural areas. Accessibility improvements are incorporated into both the building and site layout, while coordinated access planning allows the nature center to remain open throughout construction. Through detailed coordination, accurate cost opinions, and well‑developed architectural and civil documents, AEW ensures the project stays aligned with budget, permitting requirements, and operational needs. The upgraded sugar shed will support the Nature Center’s signature maple syrup education program by providing a safer, more accessible, and more functional space for demonstrations and community events.
