Vernier and Mack Intersection Improvements

The City of Grosse Pointe Woods partnered with Anderson, Eckstein & Westrick, Inc. to design and administer Michigan Department of Transportation‑led improvements at the Vernier and Mack intersection, a location historically challenged by unsafe left‑turn movements and heavy pedestrian activity from nearby schools. The project aims to significantly improve safety by eliminating multiple left‑turn conflict points and introducing a redesign that directs drivers to use Michigan lefts for safer traffic flow. AEW’s traffic engineering solution also restores an east‑of‑intersection left turn previously prohibited, improving local access while reducing high‑risk maneuvers. Because of the large number of student pedestrians, construction scheduling required careful planning to ensure work occurred while schools were not in session and was executed in multiple coordinated phases. AEW provided both traffic engineering and construction engineering services to support these constraints and maintain safe travel through the work zone. Once complete, the redesigned intersection will greatly reduce collision risks for both motorists and students, offering a safer and more predictable crossing environment.
