Vernier and Mack Intersection Improvements

The Vernier and Mack Intersection Improvements project was undertaken to address long‑standing safety concerns at one of Grosse Pointe Woods’ busiest intersections. Working with the Michigan Department of Transportation, AEW provided civil engineering, structural engineering, surveying, traffic engineering, and construction services to develop a safer and more efficient traffic pattern for motorists and pedestrians alike. The previous intersection configuration allowed multiple direct left‑turn movements that created conflict points between vehicles and the large number of students and families who walk through the area each day. AEW’s design replaced these movements with safer Michigan left configurations, introduced a new allowable left turn east of the intersection, and added a dedicated school crossing to shift pedestrian activity away from the primary intersection. The project required careful coordination of roadway, traffic, and pedestrian improvements within an active travel corridor serving three nearby schools. By separating pedestrian crossings from high‑conflict turning movements, the redesigned intersection significantly reduces the potential for vehicle and pedestrian interactions. The completed improvements provide a safer, more predictable crossing for the entire community while enhancing accessibility for the students and families who rely on the corridor every day.
