Mount Clemens Celebrates Revitalized Downtown with Cherry Street Mall Grand Reopening

Completed project blends historic charm with flexible design to support growth, community, and vibrant public life
Mount Clemens’ downtown has long stood as a symbol of the city’s history and character. With the completion of the Cherry Street Mall revitalization project and a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on May 30, that historic core has entered a new era defined by renewed energy, thoughtful design, and a clear vision for the future.
The project represents a major investment in the city’s infrastructure and identity. For City leaders, the timing was critical. Much of the existing downtown infrastructure had reached the end of its useful life, creating both a challenge and an opportunity to do more than simply repair what was there. Instead, the City chose to reimagine the space in a way that supports long-term growth and community vitality. As Mayor Laura Kropp explained, “Downtown Mount Clemens is the heart of our community, and investing in its future was essential to ensuring the long-term success of our city.” She emphasized that the goal was to create a destination that reflects the city’s potential while attracting new residents, businesses, and visitors from across the region.
That forward-looking approach guided the design led by AEW, where flexibility, safety, and adaptability were key priorities. “Our vision for downtown Mount Clemens was to create a space that is flexible, safe, and built for the future,” said Kyle Seidel, PE, Project Manager at AEW. Rather than installing permanent features that are difficult to modify, the new Cherry Street Mall was designed as an open environment where furnishings and amenities can be easily adjusted over time to meet changing needs.
The removal of curbs and other trip hazards has created a smooth, pedestrian-friendly surface that improves accessibility while supporting a wide range of uses. Retractable bollards further enhance the plaza’s versatility, allowing the street to function normally for traffic while offering the ability to quickly transform into a car-free space for festivals, events, and community gatherings. This dual-purpose design ensures that the downtown can serve residents and businesses every day while also accommodating larger events that bring the community together.

Community input played a central role throughout the project. AEW worked closely with City leadership, holding weekly coordination meetings with departments including Public Services, Community Development, and Utilities, along with the City Manager and Mayor. This collaborative process ensured that the final design reflected both the practical needs of the City and the vision residents have for their downtown. The result is a space that maintains Mount Clemens’ vintage charm while opening it up for a more modern, pedestrian-oriented experience.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project focused heavily on placemaking and creating an inviting atmosphere. New site furnishings provide spaces for people to sit and gather, while updated landscaping adds greenery and softness to the urban environment. Enhanced lighting improves safety and extends the usability of the space into the evening, creating a warm, welcoming environment for both residents and visitors. The addition of a gateway sign helps define the downtown district and creates a strong sense of arrival.
These enhancements directly support the City’s broader goals of economic development and quality of life. By creating a more attractive and functional downtown, Mount Clemens is strengthening its ability to attract private investment, support local businesses, and encourage new residential development. A well-designed public space encourages people to linger longer, explore more shops and restaurants, and return more often, all of which contribute to the local economy.
The impact of the revitalization is already being felt. The new Cherry Street Mall is no longer simply a place people pass through. It has become a destination in its own right, offering a mix of restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and cultural spaces that bring energy and personality to the district while providing residents a place to gather, connect, and take pride in their community.
With the completion of the Cherry Street Mall project, Mount Clemens has successfully balanced preservation and progress. The ribbon cutting on May 30th marked not just the end of construction, but the beginning of a new chapter for downtown as a lively, welcoming center for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
